Physical Therapy for Dysautonomia

Dysautonomia

Dysautonomia, is a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, causes many problems that generally involves failure of the sympathetic or parasympathetic components of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), but dysautonomia involving excessive or overactive ANS actions also can occur.

Because this is a very complex condition it needs to be approached with extreme care as it affects vital body functions. Symptoms may include extreme dizziness, exercise intolerance, headaches, difficulty swallowing, excessive sweating or not able to sweat, abnormally fast or slow heart rate, and digestive problems.

Only a specialized physical therapy program that includes all the key modalities needed by each patient can provide the vital foundation required for optimal healing and recovery.

The Actify Dysautonomia Program is characterized by a personalized treatment plan that allows your body to get used to the changes without sending the body in. With the Actify Dysautonomia Program, we are able to slowly reset and regulate your ANS, which will translate in a significant improvement of  symptoms including pain  and fatigue.

POTS | Postural-Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia syndrome, also known as “POTS”, is a condition that may exist alone or as a co-existing diagnosis along with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or other connective tissue disorders, or even Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD). Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in POTS diagnosis among patients.

POTS  affects the blood flow throughout the body most commonly when standing up from a seated or lying down position making you feel dizzy and light-headed. Many people will also experience increased heart rate due to the blood pooling to the lower legs, shakiness and shortness of breath. POTS can also make you easily exhausted by exercise, and can even make you feel extremely fatigued for several days after an exercise session that was to intense.

Dr. Perretto and the Actify team have over 25 years of experience in treating complex Dysautonomia patients. When designing your POTS Program we take into consideration the intensity of the activities we are prescribing as well as the best position for your body to be so we can best address your needs without aggravating your symptoms. With the Actify POTS Program we are able to increase your standing and walking tolerance and endurance for your daily activities.

The Actify POTS Program has multiple parts that include not only the exercises that will improve your heart function, but also carefully applied manual therapy techniques and Vagus nerve regulation exercises and  treatments that will regulate the sympathetic overdrive also known as  the “Fight or Flight”.
